Members and SGCRA Friends,

SGCRA is opening a detour around the closed bridge two miles upstream from Box Canyon so we can restore the historic wheeled-vehicle access to Independence and beyond (see attached event flier for this upcoming weekend). We announced this event more than a month ago. SGCRA has committed more than $7,000 for fuel, equipment, event insurance, and supplies. We’ve also worked hard for more than two years with the Forest Service, Army Corps of Engineers, Montana FWP, MDT, and Park County to secure the approvals needed for the bridge detour through the national forest. As you know, this route means a great deal to us. For more than 50 years, we’ve cared for this area and leased the Tin Shack from the Cowles family to provide a safety shelter for backcountry travelers in every season.

Please join us this weekend—we’d be glad to have you with us. Remember, we’ll be working in bear country, so bring the backcountry gear you need. Pole saws for limbing would be especially helpful as we clear the trail for winter use. Please wear high-visibility clothing; we’ll have vests available if you need one. We’ll provide a water and snack station, but please bring whatever food and supplies you’ll want for the day. The forecast is calling for showers, so come prepared for wet weather.
